August 1st, 1943:
Harlem, New York Race Riots
Officer James Collins shot and wounded dindu Robert Bandy. Rumors started that he was killed which in turn started the riot. A black woman was being arrested for disorderly conduct and he tried to intervene, having hit the officer and getting shot when he ran. 3,000 people massed outside the police station when someone incorrectly commented that the dindu was killed and the riot started, killing 6, injuring hundreds with 600 arrested. The "riot" was mostly theft, vandalism, and property damage.
