It sucks. My father left a while ago, and he just does whatever my mother said. He does the same now with his girlfriend.
My mother is very left leaning, and any discussion of it she gets incredibly upset, either sad or angry, even if I stay as calm as I can.
My sister is sort of in the middle. It changes on a day by day basis with her, but she's mostly blue. I get in as much as I can, but I don't know what sticks.

My mother tends to rely on emotional appeals. When she was younger, she knew these illegals who worked on a farm, and they got raided and sent back. Some of the legal immigrants there were held in jail for a few days, because they didn't have anyone to call, they were all too poor for phones, most lived in their cars anyways.
She goes heavily by emotion, even if I explain how that doesn't make it ok they broke the law. She's bothered by how long they waited even when legal. I explain how they're changing the whole process, but that doesn't matter to her.
