The latter 2 were a bit rough around the edges but not without their charms. I admittedly love Japan, and fly there quite often due to sub 100 USD rount trip airfare, but it is still like babbys first trip. Unless you can go there cheap, or have never been, there is nothing terribly remarkable about it. It's so manufactured and fake at this point unless you spend your time in the countryside.

seoraksan, goeje-do, mokpo islands, uelleng-do, jirisan, and naejangsan are all beautiful areas. Especially loved jirisan trekking. Busan is a fucking great city as well. I have to admit that I admire Koreans for one thing: Their national pride.

When I lived in Southern California, I worked with tons of Koreans and it's always the same story: when they wanna buy anything, they will buy from another Korean.

Even if whites or others sell at a lower price, they will buy from other Koreans.

Not so with Filipinos. They'll stab each other in the back the first chance they get. Everyone is better than a fellow Flip.

I guess that's the difference between HUNDREDS OF YEARS of national cultural consciousness (Koreans / Japanese / Chinese) and a heavily fractured atomized identity (Filipino)

dunno about that. our economic model has been pretty much a 'copycat, but cheaper' style stuff, similar to 70~90's japan.

but we now got china on our ass for cheaper and our shit isn't that premium besides samsung and maybe LG. at least our brands are considered more dependable than the chinese for now but for how long?

and our culture stifles innovation because of the backwards top-down hierarchical structure. we will never create something new so we will always have that disadvantage.

when something really new is created in korea we often deem it unnecessary and shun it to death like mp3 player and milk cartons. those top people like leaders and CEOs always love to see an western example first before they try something cool and new.


the only thing we got going though, we don't shy away from competition and we've been generally better at adopting western culture than the very exclusionary japan. our culture dominates SE asia and japan's not been too strong on cultural front since their golden age passed. korean cinema is pretty good enough to be a genre of its own.

i think culture is the future of my nation. japan is stagnating and the west don't like china too much. korea can wedge in and take a solid pie off at this moment.
