When I was a young boy growing up in Florida, I thought that the term "minority" referred to white people being the superior race, and the other being minor races as to compared to whites. In all the schools I went, and the neighborhoods I lived there were always whites, blacks, Asians, Latinos in roughly equal proportion, so the thought that it might refer to the number of people never crossed my mind.

I didn't realize the actual meaning of the term until I was in high school.
