Russia is a massive country that spans both Europe and asia. Technically we are a European culture.
When we say Europe we're usually referring to the gayfest that is the EU.
Centuries of rivalry, mixed relations and Europe percieving us as this big scary unknown potential threat has caused us to view them as seperate.
Its not even necessarily about how Europe sees us but about how we think Europe sees us (although our view is often justified and vice versa)
Basically we're kind of our own thing.

And in the modern times everyone is even more paranoid.
Eurooe thinks Russia is just waiting to attack meanwhile Russia feels threatened by NATO spreading all around it like Europe and USA want to gang up on us or try to be able to control us, which Russia just wont stand for. Basically its a clusterfuck.
