You don't even have to just do pull ups, dips, chin ups, push ups (not as easy as made out just pause 2 seconds at bottom and keep good form people who think it's easy are doing a floppy fish) do planks/side planks and farmers walks for core not situps bad for lower back. Also you're legs and lower back won't be as strong as gym so do a lot of walking in hills. Ideally for lower back you would find some way to do glute ham raiess. It's the safest way to work out. There's no excuse not to do this faggot leave your untestosteronous swimming pool full of chlorine sapping your energy and go outside in the sun and do bodyweight at least don't even have to do it more than 2x a week.

I've actually started dedicating myself to working out not too long ago!
I've never been fat, and I've got the perfect body type to build mass with. I just have to lose a little body fat and start getting tone.

I've started by doing push ups, crunches, and planks every day to build up my strength and endurance, and I'm using a weight with my arms to build my biceps and other related muscle groups.

I'm actually starting to enjoy the pain as well which is a good sign. The thing is that I have an addictive personality, so if I can trick myself into enjoying working out, the pain, and the gains I make, I'll end up doing it habitually.

Start by walking this will increase appetite. The answer to that really depends on where you're at in your training. If you've just started a month or two ago you should be doing a beginner LP (linear progression) program like Starting Strength or StrongLifts 5x5. If you feel like you are stalling make sure you are eating enough (Rippetoe suggests 4000 kcal/day) and getting enough rest, both at night and in between sets.
If you've seen good progression on a beginner program but are starting to slow down then you may want to consider switching to an intermediate program.
I'm not really an expert, you can go ask /fit/ although they'll probably tell you something similar.

Yes weight lifting will give you more confidence and security. The thing is if you are that kind of person you will lokely initially quit.
The first months in the gym are the hardests, as in everything. You are scrawny, small, your form sucks, you will feel like everyone is looking at you, etc... It will be a painful experience and you will feel like quitting every day.
You need to survive the first 6 months, if you manage to get past that, once you get some small gains and know your way around, it becomes easier and eventually enjoyable

This is me, anons. 6' 2" around 200lbs. This is a pretty flattering photo with good lighting, keep in mind.

I only use kettlebells and do bodyweight exercises. I supplement with creatine.

I think I look good with my shirt off, but with clothes on, I look like a DYEL. I think the issue is my long frame and limbs, and shoulder width.

Is there a way I can pack some more lean mass onto my frame while sticking to kettlebells? I've got a 45lb'er and two 60lb'ers. I do lots of double front squats, clean and presses, rows.

nothing super rigorous, but my go-to breakfast is 3 strips of bacon and 3 eggs, with some kind of carb - either potatoes/hash browns or bread. Lunch is usually some kind of sandwich. Dinner is usually some variant of chicken/vegetables/rice but I'm pretty flexible about it all. The only principle I'd say I adhere to pretty strictly is to always have some significant source of protein in every meal. I do eat snacks in between meals; a fair bit of fruit and some junk food here and there. Fair bit of pizza, fast food, and ice cream in my diet. Very little soda and almost no alcohol. In general, I gravitate towards high-fat, low-sugar options.

Strength training off all types translates well into virtually any strength-related task. Freeweights lifting translates best obviously, but machines work as well.

Nobody is ever going to lift an engine block anyway. People who actually work in labour-intensive jobs use hoists and jacks because a job that requires you to be able to deadlift 250kg is not a job that everyone can do, and that's bad from an employer standpoint. Better to buy a hydraulic lift and not have to pay out for worker's comp when Joe Blogs blows out his spine.

A gentle lifting routine will tire you out more and yield better results than something as ubiquitous as running, and it burns more calories if you do it right. Functional strength is useful all the time in everyday.

Of course, you should really do both. 1 hour running, 1 hour of bodyweight strength graduating to compound lifts every other day, will keep you healthy pretty much your entire life so long as you don't eat garbage.

Correct. Fastest way to fuck your body is to run on the pavement unless you're wearing $300 athletic shoes. It's especially insidious when fat people are told to start running, because they will fuck up their legs even faster because the stress involved is much greater. Fat people should be swimming, or even better they should just go for gentle walks while controlling their weight with diet.

I usually just walk my dog around (he's a Malamute, so it's a lot of walking every morning and night) and do a pretty simple routine of compound lifts every other day. I used to be big into lifting but I just can't bring myself to eat that much fucking food and you need to take steroids to get anywhere anyway - it's just too much of a sacrifice.

Working out requires a unique kind of discipline. It's not more valuable than other kinds of discipline but I don't think it's comparable with the discipline of an artist of a musician either. I think that unlike practicing an instrument or doing a drawing it's not just "boring" or monotonous, but downright really fucking unpleasant. I fucking hate doing squats and they're the exercise I skip the most in a way that I don't hate sitting down and learning by rote the clause codes for Legal Aid grants, which requires no less discipline.

Running is great if done at high intensity. Sprints burn fat all day and build muscle. My wife does ultra running and is actually pretty accomplished at it and she will work sprints into her last day of training for week. Running is for broads in my opinion, but I love me some sprints.

It doesn't matter what you do so long as you do it consistently, regularly increase the amount you lift (if you successfully manage to complete a set, you need to increase the weight next time), do big compound lifts, and eat a calorie surplus.

Worry about workout regimes after you've been working out for 6-8 months.

It's not worth doing a split until you're into year 2.

But yeah, there is a bit of a distinction between sprinting and jogging. I don't like running in general because even when done properly the injury rates are pretty high at an amateur level. With weightlifting, so long as you're doing it properly, you don't really have much chance of injuring yourself until you're lifting at the upper range of intermediate weights, which most people never even get to.

The problem is that it's easy to lift improperly and fuck yourself, whereas running improperly is much safer.

Cardio isn't a total bust for muscle development (>you will never have your head crushed between the thighs of an olympic cyclist) but the best way, by far, if you want pure muscular development, is strength training.

Seems true based on my experience. I was fit back in late highschool but I'm reaching old man status (early 30's) and trying to get back into it. Been hitting it consistently lately with the little home gym I cobbled together in my garage. It's adequate for stronglifts 5x5.

I figure I should try to do it for a year and then consider moving on to a slightly more advanced routine. I hit the rowing machine in my office on rest days. So far I feel 1000x better and it's only been two weeks (normally have terrible insomnia).

in general you want your workouts to be centered around body motions - pushing and pulling weights in different directions - up, down & forward/back

that means 6 basic motions:
- pull downwards - pullups/chipups and lat pulldowns
- pull upwards - deadlifts and shrugs
- push downwards - hanging dips
- push upwards - barbell & dumbell military press
- push forwards - bench press
- pull backwards - barbell rows & cable rows

supplement with dumbell side raises and rear flies, cable/dumbell/barbell curls & tricep extensions, hanging leg raises, back raises, squats, lunges, calf raises, and you've got yourself a routine.

I attended a Lutheran private school and I played rugby there, so I had access to some fantastic strength-training coaches. From there I was religiously into gym for a few years, and though I've given it away because it's too much work to get seriously big for literally zero reward if you don't intend on working in the fitness industry, I speak to bodybuilders and people in that industry all the time.

From this wealth of experience I have derived three nuggets of knowledge.
1. 99% of "fitness people" know fucking nothing except their anecdotal broscience
2. there is a serious lack of scientific inquiry and evidence-backed discussion in the field
3. bodyweight stuff and a few compound lifts is all that anyone except legitimate athletes and bodybuilders really needs; everyone who says otherwise is trying to sell you something
