Was it in the clear or not? The various frequencies do have other people on them, it's not JUST airforce global command (or whatever they call themselves now). So, on 8992 you'll hear an aussie Over The Horizon (OTH) radar shit post every now and then, you'll occasionally hear some faggot fishermen, and you'll hear ham faggots from like italy or some shit.

>>135674295
I honestly don't know, we'd have to check propagation maps based on the location of the receiver and think about who would even want to jam the band. Last time I checked radio reference.com there was no known jammer, it's not like the firedragon of china or whatever they call it. It freaks out the idiots on /pol/ though. For all we know, the AF can jam the airwaves to get the faggot french hams off the band. But, the AF literally has multiple frequencies and stations, to be able to use this for communication during a nuclear war. So, having one station jammed .... is kinda worthless.

>>135674430
It sounds like the marintime / ham faggots that are occasionally on the frequency.

You are correct, but we're also listening to 8992, which is the frequency the global air force command works at.

Which used to be our mainline comms incase of nuclear war. Now it's a secondary, but also used for one time pad type comms, and occasionally some faggot called TECH something does burst data transmissions.

On a live EQ map, look for an earthquake in the circled area around 6AM to 11AM North Korea local time.

a 2.0 will indicate a fizzle (failed test) of 5 to 10 kT.

A 5.0+ will indicate a successful 25kT to 50 kT detonation (it is unlikely they have the tech/resources for a bigger bomb than that.)

Learn about the wave propagation.

If it's a solid white line in the waterfall and bleeds left, it's LSB. If it bleeds right, it's USB.

If it's a central white line and bleeds to both sides for 10 kHz, it's AM. Wider is FM

If's a very narrow line, it's CW.

If you set the filter too wide you'll be picking up static that isn't in the bandwidth of the original transmission.

I like a slightly narrow filter for intelligibility like many experienced radio users, but newer radio fans often think it sounds muffled. Probably comes from the difference in opinion about what radio's about, super smooth accurate reproduction or communications legibility so to speak.

Also be sure to run it off your household AC ground if you're using AC power, otherwise you could get a ground loop condition.
>>
>>135689284
2.4 is as narrow as I usually go, many hams buy aftermarket filters for their rigs as narrow as 1.6 KHz though. My current radio has a continuously variable digital filter so I can just dial it in like on the SDR.

>>135689382
KX3 is a great radio and you can expand it with modules as you go on, like internal battery / real time clock, 2m board, antenna tuner, and a roofing filter as well as the 100w amp KXPA100 and the PX3 panadapter / digital mode interface unit, which allows you to just plug in a USB keyboard and work several data modes and CW right on the little screen there.

it detects metal with MAD, in addition it can drop active/passive sonobuoys- the passives listen (for the rotation of the engine screw, crew related noises, etc) the actives emit a pulse (the sonar ping, from the movies) and listen for reverberations.

all three can detect diesels, with varying levels of effectiveness. in particular the actives should have good luck because the old kilo/romeo/november subs don't have anechoic hulls.

Most radios have the same kinds of circuits so once you can work one you can work them all.

People like big fancy radios with lots of knobs because they're easier to use than some digital menu system. I don't mind a smaller radio though, and my KX3 has just the right number of knobs and buttons to be ergonomic but of course it'd always be fun to have one for every function.

Also ham radios are really cool lookin' if they have a bunch of buttons and knobs.

i'm not talking about the antennas but the radio chassis, you don't want to ground your radio unless you're a through-ground radio experimenter
>>
>>135691044
scuse me you don't want to ground the ANTENNA

you DO want to ground the radio

Very good. Took the eham practice test and nearly passed it blind with guessing/test-taking skills/convential knowledge.

Which model, pic related? Where should I start and what's a reasonable rookie budget?

Cobby 6-1 is a KC-767 tanker. Trek 8-1 is a C-17 cargo bird.

What I find remarkable is that military aircraft can be tracked so openly. How is that possible? Why do they allow it? Or is hiding it not worth it anyway?

Sony ICF-7600GR, get the AN-LP1 loop antenna too as it will help your receive and give you directional capability for nulling out noise or zeroing in on a signal better.

I'm guessing they need to broadcast to avoid collisions or false alarms in the areas they are opperating from. A covert operation would probably not show.

Now note the complete lack of North Korean, Chinese, or Russian planes over their respective countries.
>>
>>135691759
You'll almost never see a combat aircraft on here, or any aircraft on a mission other than training or when it is flying in normal ATC areas.

Those planes in Japan shut off their transponders (or moved out of range) when they reached their altitudes.
>>
>>135690257
You can find towers for pretty cheap or free, just have to pick them up. I got a nice about 50' tower by just asking. I'd browse eBay or talk to your local radio club. Someone's got something sitting around they don't need I'd bet.
>>
>>135691967
Yeah it's just a signal they beam out, it's not a live radar.

In the event of a war they'll turn off the signals or even spoof their locations.

This was the most interesting aircraft I ever tracked on here. It was only for a few minutes, but I did not think it would ever be visible on a site like this.
>>
>>135691044
Would that make a difference on the comms receiver? I know I'd have to with the transceiver. My ft 8900r has no place to ground to, but its also a mobile

Best Korea moves items by rail especially VIPs.

Their airfleet is aged and what is there is used for insertion into Worst Korea.

It helps of course, excepting if you're using a loop antenna in which case you don't ground.

bigger = better

to get into a really good receiver of any vintage you'll want a thousand bucks, pic related was made over 50 years ago and is still used today by nasa and the military
>>
>>135692963

well other than something the mercury 7 used, perhaps something somewhat modern under $1500?

If I wanted to spend $100-1500 on the best shortwave receiver I'd buy a JRC NRD-545. It's stereo equipment width so it'll fit right onto your rack and you can play it though your proper speakers.

Another option is the pic above, similar price for a real hard-core military receiver which is still among the best.

Thank you. Just want something I can plug into a wall and get started. That NASA thing looks awesome however 26273 pounds and taking up a room isn't an option without the dogs knocking it over or the ball-and-chain bitchin'.

We have strict code here. I can't put up an antenna.

My roof peaks' are shaped like a T, so I took a 100 foot copper wire antenna and spiced it into a T-shape on the roof (insulated and not touching the roof).

I have good reception with that. On most jays, I can hear Japan and Russia pretty well.

They work well if you have local noise sources.

>>135694195
Sadly because of the decline of shortwave broadcasting, there are very few high end shortwave receivers suitable for a listener, but the Icom R-75 is still available new because it was just recently discontinued. It's the last affordable analog unit and people really like it, so that's another option.
>>
>>135694195
Yeah that's what I wanted when I started. But you're gonna wanna get an external antenna up outside. A long wire would work, but a wire dipole would be better I think. Really easy to make too
>>
>>135693574
SHIT
It rejected my firs thread and my copy paste didn't have the fix... sorry senpai
>>
>>135694510
Yep just some wire. The art of antennas is just a great subject and a cheap hobby.

I made several 2d fractal antennas on a big ass piece of cardboard and want to make a 3d one out of some fairly rigid wire.

>>
>>135690804

depending on type of pilot you are.. fixed wings are pussies because you can jerk off while flying, try doing that in R22 :D
>>
>>135694390
That's rough. As long as it works it's good in my book. I thought I saw something about a law being passed that would let hams put antennas up in hoa areas. Not sure tho

I haven't looked much at fractals. What band are you using them for?
