The one saving grace of many transnational routes in the US is the climate preserving the roadways. Your infastructure is appaling and has been stagnating since the long forgotten American innovative period of the 1950s.

Outside of dry, arid regions the only place I've experienced good roads in the US is on the north east coast.

>>
>>135627538
I'm no engineer, but just by looking at it I see tunnels in the bottom part of the picture, tunnel in the right, tunnels in the upper left corner.
Upper right corner looks like a mountain (good luck building there). So while under normal circumstances it would make sense to do a cloverleaf or turbine, notice that these are not normal circumstances. It very well may be that it was simply not possible to follow the regular intersection designs - unless they blew off the mountain itself.
I suppose one just has to go by the sings as one's sense of direction will be hampered anyway by the fact that driver will most likely emerge from a tunnel, drive through the intersection and end straight up in another tunnel...

>>
>>135633647
I feel it's because we do not have any sort of vehicle inspections in most states. So people end up driving their hooptie until the wheels fall off. When you have roads with no limits, you have to be able to make certain that people are not going to take an unsafe vehicle up to adsurd speeds. Also, most of our speed limits were put into place to try to maximize gas mileage on most vehicles. When they went to a nationwide 55mph limit, it was because for most vehicles 55 was the speed where most vehicles got the best mileage. At least the best speed/milage tradeoff.
>>
>>135642443

>>135627905
Ah, just the basics. Simple two lane, free to pass into the oncoming traffic. Gorgeous views in the horizon.

The Caesar salad of roads. If you can't love it, you have shit taste.
>>
>>135643061
But most of the roads in places like NV have higher speed limits like 60-80. My opinion is that it's a combination of shitty drivers, road conditions and wildlife. I've gone 180mph in a ZL1 on certain roads in NV but cruising all the way to your destination at that speed is basically suicide because the roads have really poor stretches here and there, and at night especially you're probably going to hit a coyote. There's just so much distance that the roads can't be properly repaired since there's not enough traffic to justify it. It's a very different dynamic than the Autobahn which is optimized for traveling at very high speeds.

>The red-white-red Latvian flag (German: die Banier der Letten) was first mentioned in the chapters of the Rhymed Chronicle of Livonia (LivlĂ€ndische Reimchronik).[1] This historical evidence places the Latvian flag among the oldest flags in the world. The chronicle tells about a battle that took place around 1279, in which ancient Latvian tribes from Cēsis, a city in the northern part of Latvia, went to war, bearing a red flag with a white stripe.[2]

Traffic light intersection on an Interstate where most drivers are driving at 80 MPH? That's a recipe for disaster
>>
>>135646820
It's cute that you think that's even possible for that road
>>
>>135646425

Interstate highways were commissioned and partially paid for by the federal government, but are owned, operated, and maintained by the states. In the case of the highway I posted, it is operated by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Roads are paid for by gas taxes which are quite low universally in the United States compared to European countries to begin with.

In areas such as Northern Virginia however, there are extreme amounts of vehicles and people paying gas taxes along with vehicle "personal property taxes" which *should* help pay for the maintenance and improvement of these highways, since at a certain point the wear and tear is eclipsed by the volume of tax payers. The problem here is that the state legislature is in Richmond which is roughly 2-3 hours south of Northern Virgnia, and though this part of the state needs road funding the most, and generates the most taxes by far, the politicians in Richmond are disproportionately from other areas of Virginia such as Norfolk/Newport News/Hampton Roads (where we build our super-carriers) or more backwoods areas towards the Shenandoah/Appalachian mountains.

The result is that the money which should go towards proper road maintenance and updates in Northern Virginia is purposely distributed elsewhere, because Northern Virginia is the stronghold of faggorty and Democrats who want to politically take hold of VA and steer it into the abyss. This area is the sole reason why VA went democrat in the past election for example. Roads up here are shitty, falling apart, poorly funded, and rarely improved as a result, since state reps would rather take that money and build beautiful highways in the Republican parts of the state. Since it's the price to pay for keeping this state conservative at the state level I'm ok with it, but I can't wait to get the fuck out of the D.C. area.

>I-95
>on West Coat
pick one

Interstates ending in a 0 are cross country East West.
Interstates ending with a 5 are cross country North-South
Numbers increase as one is farther south. So I-70 is a bit south of I-80
West is lower than East. So I-95 is the farthest east cross country highway that runs north south.
Odds other than 5 and evens other than 0 are roads that do not cross the whole county but are north-south/ east-west respectively.

Don't they teach this stuff in school anymore?

Their mistake was trying to grow it to full size in soil, we usually take them out of the field and put them in their final location or at least closer to it, but then you dig the roots out first and then plant them in concrete soft enough for them to burrow through as it grows. Not all houses have roots strong enough for this when initially re-planted though, so sometimes you might just put in the steel rebar and fill it in with concrete when it's closer to fully grown.

Where I'm from (Charlotte, NC), drivers are notorious just for not using their turn signals properly.
Not that they try to turn into other people's lanes and run them off the road or anything. Just that they aren't courteous enough to signal to the people behind them.

Then I went to Arizona, ten years ago.
Their thing, apparently, was that they treated red lights just as the faintest of suggestions. They blew through active intersections all the fucking time. It was a constant throughout the state.
What the fuck. How is this a thing?

Well yes, but then again you have an extra lane to do so.
So you accelerate and brake on the extra lane not on the actual autobahn.
It barely affects traffic.

Because those roads pass through counties with small populations but heavily trafficked highways so speeding tickets are a good source of revenue.

And they know you won't want to go back there to fight the ticket, so you'll just pay the fine and be done with it.
>>
>>135633647

In many jurisdictions it's based on how many houses/buildings are in the area. We had this issue years ago where I went to the goddamn county several times because speed limit dipped from 55 to 45 to 35 within a few hundred feet because muh zoning and it was fucking stupid (also cops would do speed traps all the time).

Of course, their solution was just to space everything out and keep it from 55 to 45 to 35 which was stupid. I ended up moving away. Fuck those yankee carpetbagging cocksuckers

Construction fag here, worked in pre-cast concrete for years

I dont know if you guys realize how insane this is. We use styrofoam in the white mans concrete as well, but this, this is turbo gook and WILL result in chink deaths. Imagine a sandwich, your bread is concrete anywhere from 6"-12" thick, in the middle you have a 6" slab of styrofoam for insulation. Periodically throughout the styrofoam you cut a hole and insert a truss, this allows the concrete "bread" to form together. Not to mention the whole thing is packed full of rebar.

Simple, safe, effective.

What you see here is styrofoam with 1/8" of concrete around it. Thats it. What in the actual fuck China..

Toll roads are the worst in the world though. I was going to rent a car and head west but for the week my tolls were estimated at about $250-$300 just to use the roads. Tokyo to Osaka alone was $120 toll road.

The toll is most expensive than the car rental or the fuel if you plan on driving all over.
