I think after ebolachan and the embarassment of /x/ I think something did take an interest in 4chan, and /pol/ in particular. When the Baal temple bombing/Mecca thunderstrike, I got curious since we did meme punishment to muslims. After the baneplane crash something something dicided to give us a little nudge that it knew we existed and a few of us saw it and that it knew that we knew it. This was confirmed again during the trump election. I know viral marketing exists but some of it was oddly, very oddly, particularly involved. Trump getting the nomination and a thunderstrike the same time on Trump tower shows something else knows and it knows that a few of us knows that it knows us that know.

There used to be a lot more stormfront shit on the board, like Hitler and nazi threads all day. Moot started banning them for a short while in 2013 or 2014. The most popular memes were the merchant (by far) and Ron Paul / happening. I'd say spurdo was 3rd but he came from International (and a different chan before that I think). Less memes than now I think overall, and they were less prevalent as arguments in discussion.

Biggest difference is that there was a lot more quality discussion and less memepinions. This board really turned to shit when the memetard tweenagers started emulating what they perceived the /pol/ values to be and pushed an orthodoxy to the meme beliefs, eventually drowning out most discussion because people got tired of being shitted on by groups of petulant middleschool ignoramuses who want to be accepted by their kewlservative peers.

I remember the 2008 financial crisis on this board (maybe it was on /news/ back then, don't remember) and how much heavy discussion there was, and it stands out as the pinnacle for me. I don't think we'll ever be able to return to that level of quality discourse though
