Thompson's probably the most overrated writer in history.

The reason his writing is so revered by some lesser mortals is that he was talking about things that no one else was talking about. "Gonzo Journalism," as they called it," was about subjects the American public couldn't access. Where else is Joe Average of Bodunk, Iowa, going to read about being embedded with the Hell's Angels, or the effects of ruinous amounts of hard drugs?

I mean Thompson, he was all right. He told a decent story. But he was certainly no genius. His writing can be banal, self-serving, and even confusing on occasion, but the flash of genius is simply missing. You can't replace substance with style.
