My grandfather fought with the British army. He never had anything negative to say about Germans themselves. The only time I saw him get annoyed about it was when talking about discovering that a rather portly officer was in charge of the Bergen-Belsen camp.

From my own experience, I was surprised on my trip to Germany, going through many small towns, to see memorials in every one of them. They weren't really nationalistic or anything like that, just the names and saying things like "In memory of the war dead". Still, I didn't expect to see such a thing.

My grandparents disliked the Brits for bombing our cities, but they understood that such shit is normal in wartime. They really hated the USA for destroying our culture, especially in the years/decades after WWII. Grandpa spend years in a Russian POW camp but said they were alright. Conditions weren't comfy of course but they never treated him too bad so there's that. Dunno, don't feel like writing a whole book here.

German side story: my German teacher in high school was in the German Army, was conscripted at 17, and served in Bavaria. He said his unit never fought any battles, they were guards, essentially. He said the only thing he shot was a tree at night, because he was scared shitless. He said they heard rumors of camps and things, when guys were off duty and drunk, but even a whisper of SS, they'd turn white and leave in a hurry. They didn't know the full truth until after the war - and were horrified. He came over to the states as soon as he could, after talking to US soldiers during the occupation. Cool as fuck dude. Said the only time he saw Hitler was at one of those massive rallies, and Hitler was a speck far away.

For grandpa rather patriotism than nazism, he just loved his country and wanted to protect it. Grandma was a full blown nazi though. Not as in actually understanding the politics/philosophy behind it, she was not too smart. On top of that blind hatred for Jews without even being able to explain it with proper arguments. Grandpa hated jews too, but at least he was able to explain why kikes are bad for this planet.

German checking in. My grandparents hated Hitler and the Nazis, still had to fight. One was paratrooper who got shot in the leg in Italy and became a POW by the Americans. That was the equivalent of winning the lottery back then.

I think a lot of people forget, that a lot of german soldiers saw the idiocy of the Nazis and knew they were fighting for the wrong cause. That was one of the reasons the war was lost...the fighting motivation was not very high. People hardly mention that, especially on /pol/.

My grandfather was 14 in 1945 and he was sent to man anti-aircraft guns on the coast of the Baltic sea in the final weeks of the war. He said they mostly hid in the woods because they were terrified.

They lived right on the border of the Polish corridor, so they were always scared that the communists would come and massacre them like they did in other nearby towns before the war. Something like 98% of their town voted for Hitler because of that. My grandfather didn't really remember the poverty of the Weimar era, he said he remembered his childhood as idyllic and prosperous, and then things slowly began to worsen as the war turned. By the end, they were starving.

His two cousins and uncle both fought at Stalingrad. The younger son was killed and his father wounded, so he was sent back home. He came back furious, ranted about how Germany was going to be decimated, and drank himself to death within a week.

My grandfather was interred in a Danish POW camp after the war, but the rest of his family were still in the east when the end came. His older sister used her position as a red cross nurse to help some of the family escape across the border (and got raped several times while doing so apparently), but their grandmother and several cousins were unwilling to leave.

They got special permission to enter East Germany some years later to attend their grandmother's 90th birthday. When they arrived, they noticed that one of their cousins, his brother, his wife, and their three children weren't present. My grandfather asked one of his young nephews where they were, and his nephew was confused because he had no idea who these people were. My grandfather asked again, and his grandmother slammed her hands down on the table and snapped "don't ask questions!". To this day, we don't know what happened to them. Aside from entire branches of the family disappearing, my grandfather was appalled at their living conditions, and the state their town had fallen to.

Well my grandparents would have preferred no war to happen obviously. They didn't hate anyone involved.

My granddads fought because they had to, it was kill the other guys before they kill you. My step grandfather was an american POW and was interned in the USA for a while, he and the other prisoners got along well with the americans.

To me it sounded like they just got taken by the events and did the best to survive and try live normally as far as the circumstances allowed it.

He pretty much said the Germans were nice people and he got along well with the German GIs. He claimed a lot of people distrusted the Russians. "See you know German will shoot you, not the Russians though. I put that aside, I knew who wanted to shoot me who I need to shoot back. In war feelings get you killed. Save those for your family when you get back"

Grandparents never ever talked about WWII. Two things related happened:
I once asked my grandma what a jew is. She gave me a thousands yard stare and said "in this house we do not talk about jews!" in such a cold way that my bones were freezing.
Other happening was when i was watching "back to the future". Both chimped out and told me not to fall for american degeneracy.
I wish they were still alive.

My grandfather was Ukrainian and was abducted by the Germans to work in a forced labour facility after they invaded the USSR, where he was mutilated. When the war ended and Germany lost, he couldn't return to the USSR because he would probably die in a gulag, because those who were forced to work in Germany were considered traitors. Accordingly, he hated Germans and Russians equally.
Other grandfather was in the RAF and didn't hold any ill will towards the Germans. I think most WWII veterans think that the war with Germany was pointless and still like Germans to a significant degree. However, I do not think that there is a single WWII veteran alive in Britain who does not hate the Japanese with a burning passion.

My great-grandfathers were both stationed in the eastern front.One of them got deadly wounded and his location is unknown.The other one got hit in the knee at the end of the war and surived it.

I can't give any information about what they felt,because they all died before me,or when I had literally no memeory at around 2.(Also the female ones.)

My Waffen SS grandfather on my mother's side once mentioned that they did not want to fight the British. The war with the British seemed more like one which had been forced upon them. From what I perceived as a kid there was also this notion that Ukrainians and White Russians were not so bad at all; it was the Russians (the more Asiatic, the worse) who were expected to behave like animals.

Which brings me to my father's side: they had a mountain farm and were allocated an Ukrainian for labour. He was considered part of the household and sat right there at the table with them, eating. Same work, same food.

They got along well considering communication was difficult, although they did not always understand his ways. Like one day they crossed a field and suddenly he was getting totally excited, squatted down, and, repeatedly shouting a Slavic word?, frantically started digging up the earth with his bare hands. They never figured out what he was thinking; the dominant theory goes that he thought he had seen a nest of steppe bees and tried to get at the honey. Anyway, they weren't bees, it was a nest of mean Alpine wasps, and a hundred of them (if oral history is to be trusted) swarmed up his trouser legs and stung him right in the nutsack. His balls swole up to the size of a basketball and he almost died. Somehow they managed to get him back on his feet within 2 months.

He was scared shitless when the Red Army approached - although they never made it to Upper Styria: the locals released a few British POWs, handed them guns and made them stand in the middle of the main roads to fool the Soviet vanguard into thinking the British had been faster: it worked, and the Russian advance came to a screeching halt. The harder part was to get a messenger to the British HQ to tell them to hurry TF up before the Soviets figured it all out.

Anyway, around that time the Ukrainian said goodbye and then took off west. It is said he went to Canada.
