There is a combination of things.

The chief selling point of Netflix in the beginning was their vast back catalogue of old TV shows and movies. They were first, but slowly but surely the rights holders started demanding more money/wanting to create their own rival sites. Also, shit like Hulu and Amazon catching on to the fact that there are people who don't want to wait a year to get new shows on Netflix. So they started promoting themselves around the idea of getting new shows ASAP on their site.

Hulu basically was able to cuck Netflix this way by getting new shows up the day after they aired on the pay site/a week after they aired on the free site. Also, for having a lot of exclusive shows not on netflix like new episodes of the Simpsons.

Meanwhile Amazon cut a deal to stream HBO shows and snapped up the exclusive streaming rights to a LOT of high profile shows (Hannibal, Justified, Americans, Downton Abby), meaning you could only stream them on Amazon Prime.

Netflix dealt with this two-fold :

1. They basically decided to let their ENTIRE back catalogue lapse in favor of going after NEW films instead and exclusive rights to said new films along with new shows.

2. Original programming; which Amazon and Hulu eventually started doing too.

Netflix was even open about the end goal they were pursuing. They wanted Netflix to eventually be all big budget Hollywood movies (rotating constantly in terms of letting them lapsed and replaced with newer ones), original content shows/movies, and a handful of long running TV shows currently on the air.

Them going full on social justice warrior with original programing wasn't the straw that broke the camel's back so much as people realized that Netflix was letting older shit lapse so they could fund new programs, which only appeal to a super narrow/niche audience.

The average Netflix user just ignores SJW shit from the company, since (right now) there is no way for Netflix to force people to watch it. It's why they ended up killing Sense8 and a bunch of SJW original shows early this spring.

But the chief thing keeping Netflix from returning to it's former glory is the fact that they are no longer the only game in town. Streaming has balkanized to the point that no one website will ever have the monopoly on everything.

He then leaves the pen and just watches from the outside.

I've also started to watch clips of old American game shows and late night shows. It's bizarre to see how much the world has changed. The celebrities of old had an entirely different aura and commanded respect when they walked into a room, unlike today's slimy weasels. Also, if you watch something like What's My Line, you'll notice that the celebrities of the 50s and 60s were actually very well read, classy and eloquent. It's the polar opposite of today.

I signed up for the months free trial back in 2008ish when they launched the streaming service, the UK version was absolute terrible, the movie choice was abysmal, the streaming rate was useless. That shitty experience stayed with me and i've never been back to the site. I just stream my movies and TV shows from the pirate sites.
