Going by boat across the Caribbean isn't really practical, it's not like the Cubans who only had to float 90 miles to Florida. So boat is not really an option.
By land, they can try to get into Colombia, but luckily the Darien Gap makes it really really inconvenient for South Americans to illegals cross into the US. The only way around is to pay for a ferry or something. So unless they have other means to get to central america first then take the traditional methods of illegal entry, they are kind of stuck there because of geography.
