Saints is a term for people in heaven. Canonized saints are people understood by the church teaching authority (if you don't know how this church has a teaching authority ask and I can assist) to be in Heaven and are basically models of the Christian life.

We can skip asking others to pray for us and pray to God. We are asked by St. Paul to pray for one another however so we have reason to to begin with but having and asking those to pray for you is expressive of being one with them in the Body of Christ. We suffer with each part of the body.
