The British ended it, they abolished slavery before Lincoln actually freed the slaves on US soil, so the US prolonged slavery, and Europe never had any equivalents to KKK or the Jim Crow laws.

The international slave trade was banned, the domestic trade continued though the civil war. The Slave Trade Acts were fervently enforced so thousands more slaves were smuggled into the country. That plus the invention of the cotton gin being in America only prolonged slavery. The legal doctrine partus sequitur ventrem of which made the children of slaves automatically slaves upon birth didn't help either.
