Civic nationalism only works if there is one overriding national culture, e.g. Rome, America, Brazil (fucked up for reasons not really related to race) but when it does work, it works well.

Ethnic nationalism can work well too but can also easily go fully autistic (e.g. Hitler, Japan, Italy) and ruin nations if comprised of more than one ethnicity/group (e.g. the clusterfuck that is Iraq).

/pol/ will of course tell you ethnic nationalism is the way to go but honestly civic nationalism with one main culture is the best way.
