God as a word may be used for many different things, it may be a word for "all there is", that is why in Islam God is called Allah (The One); or it may also be used to refer to consciousness itself, saying that all sapient life participates in "God" or is part of it. What you must understand is that "God" 's existance or not is entirely dependent on how you define it.

For example in the Dhammapada there is references to 'Mara', which is some sort of demon that tried to stop Lord Gautama from achieving enlightenment. Does this mean that Buddhism teaches belief in supernatural entities? No, Mara could as well be a metaphor for the Ego, a function of our brain that protects us from change, or whatever else you could attribute it to.

Buddhism can be interpreted as a philosophy, ethics (a lifestyle/practice) or a religion on the traditional sense (though I don't recommend the latter). Any approach is encouraged and it's up to the practitioner to try things out on his own accord and see what works and what doesn't.

I hope I cleared things out a little. Pic related is what I began my buddhist practice with years ago, it's a small booklet (10pgs or so) and you might be interested in looking it up.

Here in Taiwan one is kind of pushed towards Humanistic Buddhism, being Fo Guang Shan the biggest order.
It is basically a very simplified version of Buddhism that appeals to the masses, nice temple, a lot of very kind volunteers, focuses on social and cultural activities ("serving the living")

There are plenty of different schools and so on of Buddhism in Taiwan, and some are much less visible than others. Needless to say, there are some conservative, and traditionally-minded lineages too, you just need to look around and seek out what appeals to you most.

To be honest, muslims weren't all that bad a few decades ago, before Wahabbism became a thing outside Saudi Arabia. Zen philosophy.
I just meditate by myself, my practice is mostly according to Shunryu Suzuki, but I can't say Alan Watts and Tao Te Ching didn't have an effect.

What it boils down to, though, is having the mindfulness. I meditate in full lotus for 20 minutes a day and try to let my thoughts drift away as much as possible during regular activities. No mind, and yet infinite wisdom.
