Society is a word that exist solely so that we can say that we're not like the others. Society is just a word to describe the the opposing opinion that you express. Society wants you to think one way, but the person saying the word society thinks the other. It doesn't actually mean anything. "Society" can't exist because individuals may be able to form a collective but they do not articulate a single opinion. We can form communities but the word "society" as it's thought of isn't something that is even real. It all comes down to the speaker on what it means.
Take people who listen to rock music for instance. They listen to rock music unlike the rest of society. Society doesn't want them listening to rock. Society wants them listening to rap because rap is popular. Now here's a hip hop fan. Society says rap music is degenerate. Society wants him to listen to rock.

Society is just a manifestation of public opinion. And just like public opinion, society can be mixed and/or inconsistent about a topic. Over time, the positions that society has taken on an issue forms a cultural infrastructure from which other issues can be decided.
To use your rock and hip hop example, originally, society viewed rock is degenerate and immoral. That mode of thinking created the cultural infrastructure that allows hip hop to be viewed in a similar way.
