Thorium reactors were made viable back in the 1960's. The US government wanted fast breeder reactors to make bombs with and since Thorium reactors consume all of their fissible material in the process they were axed in favor of a system that produced weapon grade material.
The reactors aren't the problem, it's the policies behind nuclear power that killed it.
