What's worrying to me is that because the test of this missile was conducted at night we don't have any proper images of what the missile looked like, making it impossible for us to make any reasonable assumptions about range. All we've got to base off of it is the apogee attained during today's flight, which was about 3,700km.

I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree on some of it, as the sort of information about the DPRK missile capabilities could, as previously pointed out, just be unreliable propaganda or part of a campaign to justify intervention. Fear is a great way of ensuring the masses agree with your march to war, and nothing says fear like a nuclear-tipped ICBM with supposed capabilities of reaching Chicago.

I would recommend re-visiting some of the "experts" on this matter, as I've noticed quite a few of them changing their tune about DPRK missile capabilities since July 4th.

And everyone is pretty sure that they haven't miniaturized nukes yet. We don't know how far they're with the bus, but the chinks most likely won't help with something like that. That's not the speak of penetration aids which would most certainly be necessary.

We don't know to much about the missile itself, but enough to roughly judge its performance and set up time. It's fuckhuge, and uses UDMH with either NTO or (I)RFNA as oxidator for the first stage. Engine most likely still based on the R27s engine.

Lot of people are assuming the missile fired today was the Hwangsong-14 with modifications that were deliberately concealed by night firing, although I think it's more likely to be the case that they were testing it at a site that's likely to be used during an actual conflict, rather than in a completely ideal scenario. So in this case, it is fair to assume it's the same missile, although we don't know for 100%.

I won't comment on the technical details of their missile as it's outside of my own field, but it is safe to admit that the DPRK does not have access to a miniaturised nuclear warhead yet. As far as the Chinese helping them, if they see it as a means of sticking a thorn in the Americans side I think it's possible they'll allow the DPRK "off the chain" so to speak, to bother the US while China resolves issues in the SC Sea.

I think we're talking past each other to some degree here, you're approaching the issue from a purely technical perspective of what the DPRK is capable of, and will be capable of in 5 years. I'm trying to approach it from a geopolitical perspective where the US simply cannot allow the DPRK to achieve the ability to miniaturise their nukes and stick them on their ICBM, and won't sit around waiting for it to happen, hence making a military strike far more likely.

Regarding this, the ROK Defense Minister will be delivering an "urgent message" in a few hours regarding ROKs response to the missile test. Hopefully we'll get some additional information about the missile itself.

It seems like we just disagree on the timeframe until that happens (unless something else happens in the north korea situation, of course).

First a bit of perspective: KJU has performed more than twice the number of missile launches that both his father and grandfather launched between them.

My own knowledge of missile development tells me that you require numerous missile tests to get a proper working missile, the failure rate for these missiles normally can be as high as 5%, but given the rate of failure in DPRK missiles there is the suggestion that the Americans are involved in sabotaging them (as DPRK missile tests have a higher than normal failure rate).

Trouble with testing missiles is that you can't exactly do it in secret, and given the goal of the DPRK in foreign relations is to sit at the "big boys table", it's better to do so openly so the media in the respective countries you're trying to gain the attention of makes a big deal of it. In the case of the DPRK, the more threatening its missiles seem the better.

Ultimately the reason the DPRK has stepped up its missile tests is both: 1)To give the appearance of being more threatening, and 2)To achieve the threat by steadily improving their missile capability. I don't care if you are some backward nation, if you keep doing something you're gradually going to improve on it over time, that's human nature.

In essence, you're correct, but it's only half of it. As much as these launches make great propaganda videos back home, they serve a dual purpose of appearing more threatening abroad and achieving the threat slowly. There is of course the entire issue of nuclear weapons being a deterrent for enemy invasion, that is assuming you can achieve the ability to miniaturise and launch nuclear-tipped ICBMs before the Americans can crush you. Which is the million dollar question being asked in this thread and the last.

In nuclear wargames you want your enemy to be informed about your capabilities on a realistic level, at least it apparently was like that in the cold war, and is still true for all bigger conventional nuclear nations today (except for israel and maybe pakistan and india). You want your enemy to understand quite well what you are capable of, no over or underestimation. The norks doing this in public might not only be for the reasons you stated above, but also to show the rest of the world where they are actually standing.

Despite China and the US being somewhat neutral on the cover of things, they are (like Russia and the US) locked in a degree of rivalry, and it's safe to assume in this scenario that if the Chinese can force the Americans attention somewhere and off themselves it works to their benefit especially when they have larger issues to deal with. In this case it seems obvious to me that the Chinese are playing the Americans more than the Americans are playing them, they're using the DPRK directly as a means to distract the Americans. Trump legitimately thought that he could get China to assist with the DPRK, when he didn't realise that the entire crisis was almost in a way manufactured by the Chinese.

Perhaps it was a miscalculation on the side of China, where they under-estimated the ability of the DPRK to achieve nuclear weapons themselves, but now that they've started it, there's no slowing it down, and rather than helping defuse the situation, they think it's wiser to manipulate it for as much gain as possible.

I think if I were in the situation that the US is in, and I knew that the DPRK were on the road to developing miniaturised nuclear weapons capable of creating a credible threat to the major metropolitan areas of my nation, I would strike as far in advance of this possibility, simply so that there was no room for error in misjudging when they had the capability of striking any cities.

Who knows how much US and SK intelligence agencies now. As you pointed out earlier, there's a very credible possibility that they're sabotaging at least the NK missile program, so who knows what they have access to, in addition to continuous aerial/sattelite footage and most likely interception of most electronic communications.

The chinks also have to be careful to not make their aid look to obvious. NK just finding a highly advanced missile bus or engine technology in some swamp wouldn't end good for them.

In the end it's hard to judge what will happen. As i said, i think that military action, should it be required, is at least half a decade in the future. Simply to me it seems like NK hasn't advanced their program enough to justify it yet. But who knows if that's what they'll go for to begin with. Maybe they'll just start shooting down long range missile tests for a start

I think it's possible to extrapolate what the possibilities are in the future, but the time-frame is the issue. As you said neither of us have the required information to make an accurate prediction of when the DPRK will have miniaturised nuclear weapons capable of being fitted onto an ICBM. If sabotage is being performed by the US it would be very interesting to see how they're doing it. Direct sabotage by supplying faulty equipment wouldn't work in a nation as totalitarian as the DPRK, so they'd have cyber warfare left to use.

The Chinese have been very careful about DPRK missile development, from an outside view it appears that it's very incremental, but to what degree the Chinese are assisting the DPRK is another question entirely. Surely US Intelligence would pick up their involvement if it was more direct.

People have been suggesting that the US/ROK may attempt to down a DPRK missile ever since the July 4th test, there was a lot of movement at the Kusong launch site in the past few days that may have succeeded in throwing the Americans off (another reason to fire at night, no one expects it because you haven't done it before). Downing a DPRK missile would be seen as a useful retaliation politically, but militarily it wouldn't solve the underlying issue.

Also worth noting that the anniversary of a DPRK nuclear test is coming up, so we may see some additional movement then.
