I've always toyed with and enjoyed the idea that our species was in long times past an advanced interdimensional race with knowledge and abilities akin to gods from our current understanding.

Honestly the thread I linked is a good start. But as for that concept, they way I understand it is through ritualistic means (usually very traumatic) you can induce a split within a person's psyche that then becomes it own personality, which can be "programmed" or "possessed" by other entities, depending on how you want to look at it.

If you delve into the more conspiracy side of MK ULTRA, you'll see references to the CIA finding and using these "ritual" methods of creating programmed/possessed slaves.

The thread I linked takes it a step further with the idea that each of these slaves can become a seperate programmed node within a larger "neural network" type deal, with each person being subsumbed by a personality fragment of a MUCH (for the lack of a better term) larger entity which would exist as the whole of all these slaves.

My guess would be this could come about through some kind of AI hive mind (think Alex Jones, the big enchilada)
