Once I had a left over sandwich that I was going to take home and as I walked to my car a bum asked me for money for food, so I just gave him the sandwich. When I got to my car I had to pull around the building where the bum was and as I drove by I saw him throw away the sandwich. So now most of the time I won't even give them food.

Recently though I was taking a bus from Grand Central Station in New York and it was after hours so the main counter was closed and there was a bum there who was showing people what gates they needed to go to and where they could print their tickets. He helped me so I actually didn't mind giving him a dollar.
