They're in a holding pattern until the next paradigm shift. Right now they are the west's best case scenario in fighting communism. With no (soldier) boots on the ground, communism was wiped out and the friendly dictator kept things humming along for ~35 years. They are in an interesting position today, 50% in the western world and 50% in the arab world. They have many natural resources, a relatively young population, relatively low debt to GDP so anything is possible when the next era of the world begins.
