I think the Ashkenazim are Khazars. Who the Khazars are exactly is up to more debate.

Other hypotheses include likening Khanate and Kagan to Cohen, which would make them one of the 12 tribes. But then would you go as far as to say Khan means the Mongols are Cohens? I'd say more likely the Khazars are some kind of left-behind from Mongol invasion all the way over to Finland and Estonia.
