My favorite memorials and monuments are made by private people on their own land and up-kept by them. This was a shrine to the veterans of an Apache County, AZ: Some elderly veteran that lives over the hill purchased some land next to the only main road leading into the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation and built a shrine to his friends lost in the war. Over the decades people brought their own stuff, and he's kept it neat and clean the whole time. People like that are the reason I love America and miss it

The renovation of the Parliament was completed, the square was reconstructed, mostly to its pre-1944 state, a 1956 memorial and a statue exhibition was built under the square and no cars are allowed to park there anymore.
3 monuments, 1 fancy rooftop and a small relief was rebuilt and now they are planning to renovate the buildings surrounding the square.

The Vimy Ridge memorial may look weird from a distance, but the statues on it are pretty great when you look at them. There was a display at the Canadian War Museum that had replicas of them all, which really made me appreciate the monument a whole lot more.

You're referring to the Katyn massacre where the NKVD executed 4,000 captured Polish Army officers in 1940.

A lot of Polish enlisted POWs still wound up joining the Red Army to free their country from Nazi occupation (the Soviet Union suffered a manpower shortage after Operation Barbarossa decimated their Western Armies in 1941). I think this monument is meant to honor those men, not Stalin and his ilk.

That's an excellent one. His wife lobbied extensively to get a monument for him at Gettysburg. I was lucky enough to look through her personal papers last week. Holding in my hands her original speeches at Gettysburg in 1938 & 1941. Her efforts were successful in 1941, however Pearl Harbor happened a short while later, and the project was dropped. They then put the 80 year old woman to work, building B-29's at the Bell Bomber Plant in Marrietta, GA.
