Yeah, it's Dudley. I read through it as part of applying to uni, and found it pretty accessible to lay readers.
As far as city legal careers are concerned, Sussex probably won't get you very far, even with a first. Outside of London you're fine, but be aware that the pay drops drastically depending on firm (e.g. first-seat trainees at a high street firm can be on £18-20k, compared to £40k+ around Moorgate). Of course, the firms/sets all say they don't care about uni, but some are more elitist than others. Are you looking into insight days at firms or mini-pupillages at chambers?

>The Queen's constitutional prerogatives are the personal discretionary powers which remain in the Sovereign's hands. They include the rights to advise, encourage and warn Ministers in private; to appoint the Prime Minister and other Ministers; to assent to legislation; to prorogue or to dissolve Parliament; and (in grave constitutional crisis) to act contrary to or without Ministerial advice.

I don't know it sounds like a fox and the grapes situation for someone in my position to be saying this but I'm not sure I would be happy working in London anyway despite the pay. We get a lot of firms scouting about on campus and quite a few opportunities for shadowing show up each year so hopefully I can still make a career out of all this. I wondered about going into chambers for mini pupillages and the like but I don't think I'm in the position to be aiming that high into barristerdom if I'm honest, my A-levels weren't as good as I hoped they would be obviously.
As I say the opportunities at solicitors firms are good so there's something to be optimistic about I hope.

>>135190208

The problem is that the Divine Right of Kings idea is itself a historically recent innovation (OK, it goes back to the 1600s, but relatively speaking). Take some Picts, Celts and Silures
And let them settle,
Then overrun them with Roman conquerors.
Remove the Romans after approximately 400 years
Add lots of Norman French to some
Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Vikings, then stir vigorously.
Mix some hot Chileans, cool Jamaicans, Dominicans,
Trinidadians and Bajans with some Ethiopians, Chinese,
Vietnamese and Sudanese.
Then take a blend of Somalians, Sri Lankans, Nigerians
And Pakistanis,
Combine with some Guyanese
And turn up the heat.

I am not an absolute monarchist, but England has never been an absolute monarchy since the Magna Carta in the 13th century and even before then, arguably so, as Kings were still subject to councils.

>So it is theoretical?
Uh, this is hard to say. The last was compiled as recently as 2003-2004 in an attempt to be more transparent about the Crowns powers. On a legal technicality, they're 100% enforceable, and 100% legal. The Queen still approves all law, she still appoints Prime Ministers, and she still holds Consent powers but a) they're mostly devolved to ministers, b) things such as the appointment of a PM is done, again, on ministerial advice or the advise of an ex-PM if not chosen by the electorate.
These powers EXIST. They are legal for the Queen to use. But precedent dictates that ministers handle all her duties and I've already stated, IMO, a monarch exercising their full powers could result in the dissolution of the Crown entirely.
I'll also add, the Crown still holds IMMENSE power. It is only the Queen who does not. In 1975, the Queen's Governor General in Australia fired the Prime Minister in response to a government shut down. She holds that power in all countries she is Head of State in.

>people will HAVE to start working again
Then the government will have to return to full employment as a policy goal (not by artificially creating government jobs like launching a huge army recruitment drive, but by moving to policies that benefit the real economy over financial speculation) or hire a lot more policemen. We've got far more people who want work and can't get it than those who can get it and just don't want it.

No, the point is for the Monarch to exercise their ancient powers to act as oversight of the entire system, which allows parliament and all public assemblies to follow the will of the electorate whilst having their actions subject to scrutiny, and for the Monarch to serve as the Commander in Chief, thus the military backs them.
The latter is still in notion. Soldiers """Swear allegiance"""" to the Queen.

I'm thinking Tories or SNP. It's not a conviction thing (I've come to dislike all the parties making it a bit zero-sum), just looking for a job more exciting than stacking shelves and something to kill spare time. Since I'm sad enough to waste time on politics anyway, might as well take a punt in that direction.
Problem is they've had to go and make it hard if not impossible to decide which party has better future prospects by planning another referendum!
