It used to be that if you were watching a southpark episode, and with 5min left in the episode, you decided to recorded it, it would record the whole episode from when you started watching. Now it only records from when you hit record.
Is comcast doing this bc they have a monopoly and they can?

Sounds like you got a new set top box that doesn't have that function. That or your STB was code upgraded and lost that functionality.
