I was pretty surprised by that, actually. I was on holiday visiting family first in Florida, then all over the Southern states and we were controlled twice in three weeks. There were no problems, though. Each time the cop/border patrol asked if everyone in the car was an American citizen, my cousin answered that no, that I was a French citizen on holiday, I smiled and said hello, the guy asked if I had an ID, I handed him over my passport and French ID, he checked everything was in order, handed both back to me, told everyone that everything was in order, and sent us on our way.
