This is another reason most chases happen in California. Mass amounts of huge freeways, roads, and highways along with on and off ramps for the freeways and highways every fucking mile practically. Hell, to get home from work I jump off the freeway, take 1 street, get back on to the freeway directly connected to a side offramp and get off there too, it cuts like 5 minutes of the drive out.

Sure they chase you a short distance, then call it off. The speeding ticket will net the police department a few hundred bucks at most. But the lawsuits, investigations, and court costs of a wrongful death lawsuit because you kill yourself or somebody else in the chase can cost millions. We had a woman steal a car and briefly pursued by cops. She sped away so they abandoned the chase for safety reasons.

But she never fucking left downtown. She kept driving around, getting spotted by cops, so they eventually pursued her again. She took a stupid left turn and took out an entire corner of a building. Oddly, it was an unused building destined to be torn down, but someone bought it, used the free demo work to put in a large vestibule with an elevator at that corner, and opened a hip bar, restaursnt, and leased office space on the second floor. So I guess it worked out.

There was another chase a few months later with another car that just decided to drive around downtown until the car was completely totaled. The guy did 5 drivebys past my office while everyone watched. The driver kidnapped someone so police had to pursue, but not kill the driver.
