I've worked on a ride by Technical Park SIMILAR to the KMG Fireball that failed today in Columbus. Here is a pic of the sweep that broke. It's below where the car normally attaches with bolts that are checked daily, ergo this was a very unusual failure. Go ahead. AMA. Carnival rides are inspected every day. I should know. Could be that it rusted from the inside out.
Happens when steel tubing is stored in damp/wet conditions or outside, condensation forms on the inside of the tubing which rusts away the steel. The outside can look perfect because it was protected by paint but the rigidity is gone.
Or the steel fatigued due to too much stress cycles and caused fatigue fractures.
It's not normal for a steel structure to break so cleanly.

As someone who currently works as a ride operator for six flags and has some experience in carnie and fair ride operations and erections. I still don't understand why people trust carnie rides. It takes a company like Cedar Fair or Six Flags about 10 months to install and test these things before they open, yet it takes fairs usually 2-4 weeks to erect and do tests.

I've only ridden 5 carnie rides in my life, I don't trust them as far as I can fucking throw them. I was once told by my City, My County, and My State Fair Commission to try and secure a rides harness latch with some bolts and some fucking duct tape because they lost the main bolt that screwed into the hole. The ride extends down to let passengers on/off but retracts up during the ride (as to leave a extra clearance between passengers and the floor/fences.

My guess is the mistake was two-fold. The ride didn't retract up like it was supposed to (probably fell out of position) and the fences were placed too close.
