I formed basically 90% of my musical preferences during a 5 year stretch in the late 90s/early 2000's. During that time country wasn't my wheelhouse, I was basically brainwashed by the media into loving rap, but I did enjoy other popular songs of that era.

It's sorta funny though, as I've grown older I now know that the only reason I liked those rap songs was because the beat was good. Turns out almost all those beats I liked were straight up stolen from earlier songs. Who would have guessed it!

do you have any idea how many shitty, talentless soundcloud rappers there are just ripping off each other and riding trends while they're busy not getting signed? it's a lot. i generally do not enjoy mainstream music, but rap probably has the best of it - there is much worse you aren't hearing online.
i think rap will stay in vogue for a while. it really only became the top dog on the charts in the last decade, it hasn't been long enough for people to get tired of it. just due to the nature of how beats are electronically produced today means it's easier to retain a fresh sound. it's also much easier for label heads to manage rappers than say a full band. i think that regardless of whether rap fades out sooner or later, the future of the popular musical landscape will be electronic.
