you sometimes see people sneer at the magnitude of change (along the lines of "why should I worry about 2°C?"), but what they don't seem to get is that a warming of 1°C already gets us out of the temperature range of the Holocene and into the temperature range of the previous Interglacial, when the West Antarctic ice sheet collapsed, large parts of Greenland were likely ice-free and sea level was 6 to 9 meters higher than today.

Going another degree higher, we'll hit temperatures that haven't been seen since the Pliocene, when more mobile parts of the vast East Antarctic ice sheet (Wilkes and Aurora basins) were gone and sea level was 20 meters higher.

Similarly, the people who talk flippantly about the scale of CO2 concentration ("why would I worry about something measured in parts per million?"), also don't understand that this gas essentially determined the climate of the Cenozoic and, during it's faster fluxes, changed with an average rate of ~0.0001 ppm/year. The current rate is around 2 ppm/year, several orders of magnitude faster.

At this point we are already past the dangerous tipping points IMO, we will never reduce emissions fast enough, and will probably hit 2 degrees by 2030.

Geoengineering will be the debate that dominates this century. If we don't do it a lot of people will die.

I think people are underestimating how destructive anything over 2 degrees could be.
If we ever got to 6 degrees I think humanity will be finished. How do you prepare for a situation where the oceans release hydrogen sulfide? You don't. 6 degrees warmer would be worst than a full on nuclear exchange between the USA and Russia. 3 degrees will probably cause a nuclear exchange between India and Pakistan.

We really have to geoengineer to hold the temperature down. Hopefully we'll start doing it and get good enough at it that climate change ceases to be a problem.
