Afghanistan (specifically Kandahar)
>didn't see a woman for 8 months
>can't talk about female relatives at all
>religion is everything to them
>always barefoot indoors, thus all of their homes smell like nasty feet
>eating food from a communal plate with their nasty hands
>always asking me about how much money I make
>constantly tried to convince me to become a Muslim
>occasionally tried to bomb me
>most people were illiterate and knew nothing about the world
>corruption everywhere
Good things:
>friends will defend you with their lives
>probably the most hospitable people in the world
>will do any favor you ask of them if you're a friend
Anyone else experienced some kind of culture shock? I'm sure the Irish-American anons here have.

One time I went down to Mexico and this kid was drinking Dr Pepper and then he opened up a bag of peanuts and poured it into the whole bottle, shook it up and then drank it.
Most surreal thing I've ever seen.

I didn't see much of Afghanistan when I was there
Mostly base sitting and LAV repairs and ops.
I spoke to some spec ops that said the same stuff as you. Medieval-tier, just with Islam.
The Shiite areas in Iraq that I did some interaction with really wasn't that backwards. Different, but I wouldn't call it shocking.

Continuing, I think I'd probably be more shocked going to London or Paris and seeing Euro buildings and culture with heaps of foreigners/non-ethnic Euros.
China town in Oz is more of a shock than Baghdad. You expect the latter to look like it does.
