Why would it materially change the trajectory we're on?

Elected officials don't actually legislate anymore or debate policy - they just budget. Literally all they do is budget and steer toward that path of least resistance. The mechanics of government aren't actually set up for them to do much more. If you want life to change, change that fact - give them breathing space to acually legislate and get some policy in there instead of shit budget maneuvers for anything of substance and would offer areas for nominal bipartisanship. Until that happens it's just easier to stonewall and wait out the other guy.
