Do you people realize the failure rate for dieting is something on the order of 9/10? Of the people who lose substantial weight most are back up after one or two years.

I'm not saying this as an excuse, this is just reality. I've lost massive weight myself and kept it off. But I realize I'm rare.

There's speculation as to what might cause this, my personal bet is that your gut flora gets used to a certain state and floods you with desire to get back to it. If you eat sugar your body will scream for sugar. If you lost 40 kg your body will hurt you to eat more and get back to stasis.

The thing is, if you keep the weight off and the diet changed for about a year, that switches to a new baseline. I went from drinking 2 liters of sugary soda a day to not being able to stand the taste of it. The period inbetween was the hard part.

Boogie is a hard case because he's not just obese, he's got all kinds of mental problems and a broken back which probably has him addicted to pain pills. He's got minimal chances of success, but - surgery is pretty much the only way. He needs to be forced into a lifestyle change that's physically painful to try to change. If he gets it, the pounds will come off. I think his other problems will tank him at that point.
