This number really puts America in perspective. We all see it as so crazy and can't believe that many people dies yet in WW2 over 20 million Russians died.

There were large immigrant populations from all over europe in the North, and to a lesser extent the south as well. Several union brigades were made up of German speakers and there were a lot of entirely Scandinavian units from the midwest.
