What if Goldwater won, /pol/?

The Republican Party wouldn't have been taken over by the religious right.

The current state of the republican party is a split between that and moderates who essentially oppose the religious right. Cancelling out the moderates, are either situations of party membership really that bad?
>>
I don't think it's a bad deal, just saying that Republican party had to rebrand because they were so out of touch they lost by a landslide and Goldwater was worried about them taking over the party.

“Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them.” - Barry Goldwater.

I think if Goldwater won with a majority republican congress, we wouldn't have many of the issues we have today such as worrying about social security, healthcare, high taxes and regulations, etc.
>>
>>134849440
So the Republican Party would just be Dems minus a few percent off your taxes if you make $200k or more.

Basically he sperged out over "muh women's right to choose" and degeneracy of all kinds is coming back to bite us in the ass. We should've violently repressed the cultural revolution, not tolerated and furthered it as you suggest.

He would have been the greatest thing to happen to America
The man was literally the Ron Paul of his day

Socialism would've come in sooner or later, whether he delayed it by 4 years or not. Sadly I think the same is true for nigger rights.
>>
>>134850848
I have no issue with rights for minorities. The only reason he said he opposed it was because of high government interference in fighting discrimination. Socialism was here from pro-WWII and has been since then. He would've helped fight it off.

>tfw America fell for the Johnson meme
>tfw the US is 56% and dropping thanks to the 1965 Immigration Act

JUST

*56% white
>>
why did he get BTFO so bad?
>>
>>134851201
Johnson hit him hard for supporting the use of nuclear weapons and that basically cost him everything.
>>
>>134851007
Doubtful that he would've succeeded in cutting Social Security or any New Deal era policy. He wouldn't have enacted the LBJ era policies that have stuck around, though. The general trend for Republicans is to keep the bureaucracy and economic management of your predecessors and pretend to be doing something meaningful to shrink government.

>I have no issue with rights for minorities.
I wouldn't either, as long as they were the basic rights (life, liberty.) But the various Civil Rights Acts and court decisions of the 50s/60s were abominations.
>>
>>134849318
>no immigration act of 1965
>no welfare state
>no civil rights act
>Vietnam probably ended a decade sooner
>probably would have prevented Christian fundamentalists from taking over and ruining the GOP brand

We'd be a hell of a lot better off. IMO Goldwater was the last candidate that fully embodied classic Americana
>>
>>134851201
>spoke about using nuclear weapons in vietnam
>spoke about dismantling new deal programs
>opposed federal civil rights legislation

Plus, this was right after Kennedy was assassinated. Johnson, as the former VP, was already President.
