Space colonies will be more strictly controlled than the homeworld. Initially, centralization is needed to create a viable space colony; they will never let go of this centralization. And nobody will rebel against it either, not pacified as they are. In order for space to save us you'd need whole self-sufficient colonies consisting of millions to break away, otherwise they have all of them by the jugular due to the reliance on imports of technology from Earth.
If the colonies are state-run, they will come with political officers to enforce the standard thinking, disguised as administrators, human resource managers, and so on.
There are no large collections of genuinely private capital left in the world. Even if a colonization effort is undertaken by a nominally private entity, like SpaceX, they will have to rely massively on the (de facto) world state to go forward with it and in return will be under the world state's indirect control. they will have to accept quotas and an official presence. Our only chance at freedom will be when the colonies reach self-sustaining size, at which point you somehow have to redpill enough colonists to stage an armed revolution. This will be near impossible as they will be shilling against it from the get-go ("You are ambassadors for all humanity! Your nation and the world is counting on you!") and monitoring dissident groups. Any groups that do form will be attacked by ridicule and discreditation on clandestinely state-controlled media. They won't be blatantly Pravda about it, it'll be subtle, nebulous, and much harder to fight than outright lies and propaganda. Even if you succeed in gaining independence in space, I wouldn't put it past them to simply nuke or use a bioweapon on the dissident colony and cover it up. A world-spanning state could crush a colony like an ant, even if it is on the other side of the Solar System.

Genetic engineering will eliminate these sort of biological threats entirely. There is nothing in principle to prevent absolute control over the whole biosphere. It will also be the final nail in the coffin for any remnants of human nature that have managed to survive the ideological barrage. Once they crack GE, they will be able to change human beings however they want. Power over the matter of life is power over its spirit. Complacency and obedience have be bred in dogs; why not in men?

AI is the mystery card in all this, isn't it? But with AI we can imagine only a few alternatives:

With a combination of egalitarianism ('but we can't let the rich become transhuman while the poor stay as they are! Unfair!) and fearmongering ('what if the upgrades turn people into psychopaths?'), they will acquire an unintelligible maze of regulations around the technology, effectively placing it under direct state control. It will then be used, in secret at first, to enshrine beyond challenge the superiority of our masters. When they are powerful enough, they will drop their pretenses and then we have 1984, but imagine O'Brien as a superintelligent god who can literally, physically turn your mind inside out. Life for ordinary humans becomes 'I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream.'

Read Superintelligence by Nick Bostrom. 99% of the time this technique results in the destruction of humanity and the beginning of a bubble of converted, superintelligent matter, teeming with incomprehensible thoughts, expanding at lightspeed through the universe, centered at Earth. If it doesn't, you can bet that elites will have set that AI's code and purpose to serve them. AI isn't something that can be developed by a lone free man in a garage. It will be big organizations that crack it - whether they're private or public (there's no difference at this point).

If we don't win this, there will be no return to freedom. Technology has made possible the means of eternal enslavement. Human nature has always pulled us back to some kind of norm, has established certain laws, limits and cycles within history. No slave state has stood on so many skulls that it could not topple; no lapse into barbarism was so complete that it could not be reversed - even by blind evolution. But arm the enemies of freedom, the disciples of power for its own sake, with the power to warp that nature according to their designs, and you enter a different universe. Before, evil had been visionless, senseless, opportunistic, a mere vulture feeding on the already-dead by virtue of the sleep of reason, the good and the just. Reason itself, the unlimited power of science, has armed evil with metaphysical potency for the first time. One man can stand against an empire, declare he is free, and though he may be tortured and destroyed, he may win by virtue of his incorruptible soul - and die smiling. But what when he is no longer a man - when there are no men left - only empty-eyed creatures created so that they may grovel in the dirt, grovel forever, until the stars go out, to please mad, immortal gods?

Yeah, that's why I called this the world-historical blackpill. The destruction of the West or of the white race is big enough to swallow. But we're at the tipping point of issues which are far bigger than that. The fall of the West would be merely another dead-and-gone empire; a new civilization would stand in its place in a few millennia. Even the extinction of the higher, creative races on Earth would hardly be the end; evolution would eventually correct that wrong. But this level of technology - AI, massive production, the power to change human nature itself according to deliberate design - has never existed until now, and it changes the game entirely.
