Things got tense fast and we didn't have the manpower in Europe to pull something like that off.

I'm gonna shill the Hardcore History episode "Destroyer of Worlds" as the first hour paints a pretty good picture of why invasion was impossible.
We couldn't have even nuked them like we did Japan. Didn't have the bombs or the planes to pull it off.

The longer you waited after ww2 the stronger the USSR got. If you had continued and fought the soviets in the late 40's, possibly even rearmed the germans, the soviets would have collapsed. Their manpower reserves were nearly depleted, while America had the resources to conscript several million fresh men. Soviet economy hadn't recovered from war, they were still somewhat dependant on US aid in form of trucks and other supplies.

Couple that with the 1946/47 famine that resulted from lack of manual labour, if the USSR couldn't have demobilized their 8+ million strong army because of a new attack from the West they would have starved en masse. Add to that the fact that soviet logistics were at the breaking point, the US could have knocked out the few railway junctions that the soviet supply lines relied on and the troops wouldn't be able to resupply fuel, ammunition or food.

The USSR did not have interceptors that could reach american strategic bombers of the period. They wouldn\t be able to defend from largescale strategic bombing or nukes, which probably would be used on something like the Moscow railway head.
The USSR would literally collapse under it's own weight and the effort of ww2.
