I'd counter this with the claim that it wasn't the empathy, but the arrogant belief that American liberalism is so powerful and attractive, that any immigrant will successfully assimilate in to the collective. If all immigrants BEHAVED like White people, would you care for what they looked like?

This is like the fundamental dogma of the liberal religion: everybody is totally equal and alike in wants and behaviors. As I said, you are witnessing the conclusion of liberal fundamentalism.
