You're essentially asking the question- "Can propaganda be useful?"

>commies, jews and fags have infiltrated our gov't
It was worse than he could have imagined

Post soviet documents show he was entirely correct in his accusations.

Almost entirely. He most certainly did fuck over some innocent people, but in the name of rooting out the communist threat, it would've been justified.

>(((Julius Rosenberg))) and (((Ethel Rosenberg))) were United States citizens who were executed on June 19, 1953 after being convicted of committing espionage for the Soviet Union. They were accused of transmitting nuclear weapon designs to the Soviet Union; at that time the United States was the only country with nuclear weapons. They also provided top-secret information about radar, sonar, and jet propulsion engines to the USSR.
>Other convicted co-conspirators were imprisoned (((David Greenglass))), who supplied documents from Los Alamos to Julius and who served 10 years of his 15-year sentence; (((Harry Gold))), who identified Greenglass and served 15 years in Federal prison as the courier for Greenglass.
Of course McCarthy was right.

Not much has changed. Who will be the new McCarthy and end it for good this time?

Looking at what's going on now and what we've got being taught in higher education, yes i think he may have been on to something. War hero both literally and figuratively. But mainstream schools always make him out to be paranoid. But in a way i think he had a point.

Yes and No.
Was there large scale espionage in the US government YES.
Did Mcarthy or his secret list know about these individuals or came close to targeting them NO.
When it came to general sentiments he was very correct, but very very wrong when it came to specifics - and even lied about them which is why his activity was limited to harassing a few academics and Hollywood types rather than the literal spies identifyed in the Verona Papers.
