Add encryption to this (which is required) and simultaneous loss of the disk firmware, lead-in, alignment information, and encryption keys and you'd be luck if you even got a bunch of random numbers off the bent platters after you invested hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Impact demagnetizes permanent magnets, microscopic granules of which which are the underlying medium for HDD platters to the best of my knowledge/wikipedia. But I also suspect that simply smashing the case, even to the point of shattering the platters, might not be enough to destroy information.

There's a lot of ways to destroy a hard drive. They're actually pretty delicate. It's just a matter of how new they are, the brand, and how much money you're willing to spend to get the data back (so how important is the data).

If you took the disk out of your computer, powered it up so the disk was spinning, and gave it a few solid whacks on the concrete floor, it would most likely be unreadable. This would put you into the ~$1000~$2000 range to recover data.

If you take that disk, run some good wipe utility on it like BootNuke or something then do the same thing...you're probably into $10-20k and you'd probably be luck if you got 1/10th of your data back if any.

Move on up to properly trying to kill it, degauss the disk with an external device (this will do what BootNuke does, but not with the disk head, so not in a nice way) then physical damage, the odds of you getting data at all are pretty close to 0.

A bent platter, high heat (fire, oven), or encryption+firmware loss and the data is definitely gone. At the very least you're talking about spending HUGE quantities of money (think months, clean room, guys with PHDs, electron microscopes, etc) on a CHANCE to get SOME of the data. It would have to be IMMENSELY important. Like, Nuclear launch code important.

It depends on what you're trying to get. If you take a WD hard drive, a new one, and you take the case cover off, odds are it won't work anymore. The head alignment is done in the factory and the case cover locks the heads into alignment (as an example).

Nowadays, the data density on (at least a spinning rust) disk is so high that simply getting dust inside the drive COULD cause data loss. One of the guys from IBM said that, "Whether or not the disk head actually touches the disk is a matter of schematics." A scratch on the disk surface could cost you huge amounts of data. The thing is getting it to spin again if you bend the platter. The platters are incredibly flat. Mirror flat. A piece of dust or a hair is a boulder.

I could imagine a scenario where you used fancy equipment to retrieve data off a disk that was bent in half, but it would most definitely be something that would cost as much as a house.
