Here's the thing, before Christianity the Germanic peoples had very similar burial practices to the Hindus. Imagine, thousands of bodies being burnt along the Danube and Rhine every year (because that's what they did before Christ), and crowded cities full of excrement and trash. Wanting to improve the quality of life for all citizens and portions of the city is a uniquely Christian behavior. Aristocratic polytheistic societies form caste systems, and don't really care about the condition of all classes because they are going to be comfortable no matter what. What does that sound like to you?

The only people who had the money to pay for such things were the church bishops, the pope, and some kings who weren't focused on war or infrastructure.
