Is there a middle ground between communism and capitalism, as in something that doesn't favor big business or big labor?

Try to get a big business on board with an an-cap government. Just try. They scream bloody murder at the thought of losing their gibs... especially if you notice that the regulations stifling their competition are the biggest gibs around.

"big labor" like what normal people? What's wrong with that?

Yes. Regulated capitalism. The problem is that people are easily corrupted, and when all the regulators are bought out, it devolves back into "free capitalism" (meaning the big guy does whatever he pleases while others are not even allowed to try to enter the market).
