Let me explain, your brain works on pattern recognition, when you walk in a dark street with a friend, it's not uncommon that you or him see something and the other can't, unless pointed at directly.
Seeing things in darkness is common because you can see the eye floaters on your eye and your brain still tries to find a pattern. Problem is one you are fixated on something it's hard to "unsee" it, or see other patterns.
