Actually, Pope is only a religious authority, not social/political one, he can made social/political statements but he is not infallible and can be disagreed on them. Pope really has less authority than most people think. Even as religious authority he cannot say anything that would contradict the Church's teachings (and if he would, every catholic would have to disagree with him). His power is technically reduced to ability to decide in some edge cases in matters of faith. He is not the Church. I hope he will realize that he has been misled on these matters.

So there is not that big of a deal with him compared to what non-Catholics think.
