I guess the theory is that masturbation erodes the drive for sex. The drive for sex pushes for social exploration, adaptation and goal setting. Masturbation interrupts all that.

The reverse also causes problems, when there is no outlet at all. Males simply start losing focus and priority.

I guess the balance is simply trying to get sex, or more accurately, trying to secure a worthwhile female for pair bonding.
