The main selling point of this belief is that it allows them to believe that their guys(aka the good guys) will always win against everyone else's guys(aka the bad guys), since that's exactly what happens in these stories.
I can understand them using Gandalf here, since, just like Bernie, he suffered a great defeat in an attempt to stop a horrible evil(what that could be is open to debate, either Trump or Hillary could fit the bill here, at least from a bernout's perspective). The thing they don't understand is that there is no horrible evil like the Balrog in real life, even Hillary had some positive points to some people, Trump has loads of supporters and many of them are good people, so he probably isn't comparable to the Balrog at all. They believe, however, that anyone who stands against "progress" is the Balrog, Sauron, Voldemort. the Lannisters, Darth Vader, etc
They don't understand that those are ultra-simplistic two dimensional villains that simply can't exist in real life, even just their personalities.
They expect Bernie to make a comeback, but it's impossible, he probably will die before 2020 and even if he makes it to that age, it's likely he'll be senile and/or die during his time in office. But they believe that anyway, since it's easier to do that than it is to understand how the world, life and politics work.

One of my favorite parts of LOTR now is a minor point at the end of the book. After the world is basically saved and everyone begins to travel back to their homelands, Aragorn aka the most powerful man in the world denies all men including himself from entering the Shire. Basically he recognizes the sovereignty of their ethno-state, and even though they're probably going to encounter trouble when they go back, he respects the Hobbits and thinks they should solve their own problems alone.
