What's funny is that I actually really like Kowloon City. It showed that building dense and tall doesn't require anywhere near the amount of bureaucracy and resources that it's usually accused of requiring. It showed that people living without the law over them can live happy lives in high density areas. It showed that people value and are interested in such "lawless" areas. It wasn't a vision of utopia, but it strikes me as a fascinating social experiment that shouldn't have been forced down by anything less than its own natural failure (if that ever happened - exactly as expected of an unencumbered market, Kowloon never stopped growing).

The Kowloon city is a fascinating thing that would be amazing to see irl. It is the embodiment of Chinese culture which is what ancaps want. An ancap society relies heavily and promotes local culture to an extent that no other economic structure does. It creates fascinating places to visit and live in. The government destroys these places and create a boring-ass fucking park that looks like every other park in the world while idealizing what was created via the free market.

I visited the Walled City once in the mid-80s. It was shit. Lots of triad, prostitutes, dentists and business without a license, and most of all drug-addicts. You did have kids running round all over though, sometimes playing with dead rats. There were postmen, water and electric, and some parts felt somewhat safe.

For example, you can pay a normal fee for one of the Normal Courts (tm) which for all intents and purposes are similar to a regular US Court or you could pay more for the Kid Friendly Court which deems the age of consent to be much lower than society would? Yes, their not getting as much business but they have a loyal "customer base" of pedophiles who are willing to pay the extra premium for the court? And another court based question would be that the courts would favor the plaintiff more often than not because they would be the first to pay for the case? There's an economic incentive to procure more cases so you'd want the reputation of a court which is speedy and favorable to litigation. Aren't both of these cases immoral as it substitutes moral norms for whoever pays the most?

Building codes exist for a reason. Too limit the loss of life and property should an accident occur. From an individualistic viewpoint, Kowloon could be the pinnacle of urban existence, I suppose. I mean at the end of the day really, it was just a bunch of buildings that were clustered together where lots and lots of people lived. Each and every one with their story to tell. Yea it probably dirty, noisy for sure, and not too spacious but I'm sure the people within it felt just fine. But it was cheap, you got to know and interact with your neighbors, everyone helped and looked out for each others kids and lived just fine. There was probably more social cohesion and interaction in Kowloon then in your typical suburb nowadays. You'd have a few generations living together that each helped in in their own part in running the household, you'd go to work in your little workshop during the day, and then when done chill on the rooftops with a beer at the end of the day watching the planes land by. It was probably a safe enough existence if you ignored the junkies and the didn't butt into triad business. I guess after years of living there you'd naturally start to see Kowloon as a sort of insulated world, or even a fortress of sorts , isolated from the "outside". You had everything you needed to get by and Kowloon provided you with whatever else you were missing. I can see why people who lived there would miss it after it was gone.
