What's funny is that I actually really like Kowloon City. It showed that building dense and tall doesn't require anywhere near the amount of bureaucracy and resources that it's usually accused of requiring. It showed that people living without the law over them can live happy lives in high density areas. It showed that people value and are interested in such "lawless" areas. It wasn't a vision of utopia, but it strikes me as a fascinating social experiment that shouldn't have been forced down by anything less than its own natural failure (if that ever happened - exactly as expected of an unencumbered market, Kowloon never stopped growing).

The Kowloon city is a fascinating thing that would be amazing to see irl. It is the embodiment of Chinese culture which is what ancaps want. An ancap society relies heavily and promotes local culture to an extent that no other economic structure does. It creates fascinating places to visit and live in. The government destroys these places and create a boring-ass fucking park that looks like every other park in the world while idealizing what was created via the free market.

tl;dr: Capitalism promotes and creates unique societies and cultures. Governemnt intervention destroys unique societies and cultures. The more government control there is, the less interesting the country is.
>>
>>134549542
Yes but certainly not hemmed in by such tight borders.

The fact that KWS was so dense was because it was a tiny area and a lot of people wanted to live free, even if it meant living in a beehive.
>>
>>134554834
It's always the same bullshit argument from people who want government control of the economy: "Well in this country where government controls nearly the entire economy, a single free market idea was implement and didn't produce the most ideal situation; therefore, the free market doesn't work."
>>
>>134549542

First off, that sounds pretty sweet.

Second, Ancaps just want to moral society where there are no institutions with the power to use force and violate consent.

After that, people are free to work together (voluntarily) however you want.

Would the population who pays to have a private court system and owns all the land allow this? I wouldn't bet on it (unless they are Muslim). Do you see people voting for this now? If they don't tolerate it now, they won't tolerate it in a free society ether. In a free market you vote with your pocket book.

I visited the Walled City once in the mid-80s. It was shit. Lots of triad, prostitutes, dentists and business without a license, and most of all drug-addicts. You did have kids running round all over though, sometimes playing with dead rats. There were postmen, water and electric, and some parts felt somewhat safe.

The place looked amazing, it was like this filthy, dystonian steampunk universe. I wouldn't be surprised if the Square devs didn't use it for inspiration for FF7, because it really does look similar.

I have pictures somewhere, but I CBA to scan them. I'll be lurking in case anyone has questions.

Capitalism:
an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.

Anarchy:
absence of government and absolute freedom of the individual, regarded as a political ideal.

So basically, it is capitalism without government restriction?

>LARPing as anacap while promoting underage marrage

No, ancaps believe that culture, society, and the free market can preform all the duties that the government currently does. This doesn't mean that we want child prostitution. People in western society would end child prostitution faster then the government ever would.

In an ancap system, wouldn't there be multiple of the same institutions but at different price ranges that would produce immoral situations. For example, you can pay a normal fee for one of the Normal Courts (tm) which for all intents and purposes are similar to a regular US Court or you could pay more for the Kid Friendly Court which deems the age of consent to be much lower than society would? Yes, their not getting as much business but they have a loyal "customer base" of pedophiles who are willing to pay the extra premium for the court? And another court based question would be that the courts would favor the plaintiff more often than not because they would be the first to pay for the case? There's an economic incentive to procure more cases so you'd want the reputation of a court which is speedy and favorable to litigation. Aren't both of these cases immoral as it substitutes moral norms for whoever pays the most?

This is legitimately one of the most fascinating things I've read the past few days online.

Were the citizens living there miserable? Were people living there HK citizens, or illegals? Could they leave Kowloon during the day and travel around HK?

Do you think a modern apartment complex such as this, with big private investment could work? I don't know why, but this seems really comfy. With proper planning, building a city like this over like 1km^2 could be a very interesting undertaking.

You know demurrage /Schwundgeld?
When everything went to shit in Austria in the first republic the city of Wƶrgl actually had an economic growth because of that system.
Also the state should basically be the servant of the people and take care that they have some basic needs fulfilled (moneyless welfare) because monopole on some things would be inevitable and bad (water, electricity, media, maybe even food and housing)
Just my two cents. Neither commie nor hardcore capitalist, we should find a proper balance that can be changed either way to keep up with the time.

miserable or not is in the eye of the beholder. Most of them worked in literal sweatshops without any worker safety and got little pay. many of them did barely ever see the sunlight. many people would consider this miserable.

some of the residents managed to go in and out, not sure if they were actually hong kong people with no ability to get financial clearing or what drove them there. but some of them left the place and came back.
>>
>>134556689

Sorry for the late replies mates. I hadn't realised the thread wasn't on auto-update.

>>134562100
>What was the food like?
Typical Hong Kong fare, lots of noodles, fried rice and veggies, that sort of thing. Quite delicious as everything was made in-house, and the places didn't strike me as being any less clean than any other restaurants in HK. They were VERY cheap.
>Fuck any prostitutes?
Nah, that was right during the AIDS scare, so I was terrified to frankly.
Was there any hassle getting in?
Nope, you literally just walk in, and suddenly you're in one of the very narrow corridors of that human hive. I did get some looks from the triad gangsters, and I also got the feeling that I was continually being watched. It was one of those odd feelings that if I were to suddenly somehow 'disappear' nobody on Earth would notice. I felt like a separate artifact, something different. It's a difficult feeling to describe, but it's like being on a different planet.
>Why go?
I was in HK on business, and I was in the area and wanted to see what it was like. You sometimes saw it on TV as an example of a functional ancap society even back then.

>>134559339
Hong Kongers speak Cantonese. I don't know why, but that's just the tradition. This does lead to sort of a mutual lack of understanding between Cantonese speakers and other Chinese such as myself. Thankfully some of the basic vocabulary is similar enough so that you can get by.
>huge melting pot of various asian ethnics ?
That applies everywhere in HK. If anything Kowloon felt more ethnically homogeneous than the rest of the city. Lots of old-time residents.

>1/2
>>
>>134565283
>2/2

>>134556838
>Still far better than even the best communist country.
Absolutely, or most countries in Africa for that matter. I only spent 1 day there, but what struck me was it still had a sense of community like any typical East Asian community. Neighbours watched over each other carefully and cared about each other. They helped each other with errands and repairs. I saw old ladies gossiping in the narrow halls. Kids would play on the rooves with the huge jetliners going by every 5 minutes or so. Factories would keep their back doors wide open while they were operating. I think I even remember a church.

>>134561773
>Who was living there?
The demographic were almost all old-time HK citizens who wanted to save money it seemed. I think they and the triad were the glue holding the whole thing together despite the large amount of riff-raff the place attracted.
>Were the people miserable?
Obviously the drug addicts, squatters, and the like looked like death incarnate. Some people seemed unhappy and I wouldn't call the place upbeat, but most residents seemed happy enough with their existence. But this is based on what I remember of strangers' expressions many decades ago, so I don't really know.
>Could they leave Kowloon during the day and travel around HK?
Yes, though I don't know if most people would want to. The outside world was much more expensive, and the place was really quite self-sufficient.
>Do you think a modern apartment complex such as this, with big private investment could work?
Not a good chance. Kowloon worked because the owners felt like the legitimately owned their space and looked after it, unlike modern subsidised living. Anyhow as soon as something like Kowloon were to be set up and planned, people would be flocking to game the system. The city was already well-established by the time it was internationally known.
>>
>>134564599
How did they take care of their dead?

Was electricity provided from the grid? If so, was there one legitimate hookup that acted as a distribution hub/provider?

I imagine the leaky water lines acted as an exterior fire suppression system. Making sure that some asshole flicking a cigarette butt didn't set the place on fire.
>>

>>

No. Kowloon only expanded like that after the Second World War. It was fairly small until them.
>>
>>134565384
>How did they take care of their dead?
I don't know. Wasn't there long enough to see.

>Was electricity provided from the grid?
I THINK I remember someone telling me that it was illegally spliced from the government power company. They let it slide because it was set-up by the triad, and they didn't want the chaos of the city without electric.

You have to understand that the government on both the Chinese and British side were terrified of fires, as that could spread to other parts of the city, as well as kill tens of thousands within Kowloon itself.

PS speaking of electric, the the wires would like each hall and gather at transformer-looking things like rat's nests. There was a lot of improvisation within the internal electrical network: wood was used a lot as support backing against bare, exposed wires.

Any more questions? I'm going to sleep in the next 10 minutes or so.

One thing that OP's picture rather humourously under-represents was how ETHNICALLY homogeneous the community was. The triad ran the logistics, but the core was basically all old-time residents with their families who for one reason or another couldn't or didn't want to make it in the big city.

I know ethnic homogeneity is out of fashion right now in the WestBbut I'd like to see a random sample of Singapore's population live in a society without government or law. With all the poos, Muslims, and general low-quality riffraff we have, it would be instant chaos. We literally need a government as strong as the PAP to glue it all together.

Building codes exist for a reason. Too limit the loss of life and property should an accident occur. From an individualistic viewpoint, Kowloon could be the pinnacle of urban existence, I suppose. However, from a societal view, or rather from the perspective of a governing official, it was a massive liability that endangered not only everyone who lived there but the lives and property of everyone adjacent.

Don't get stuck focusing only on individual rights, because when things go wrong their is a very real cost involved in cleaning up the mess. One which will have to be paid by parties unrelated to the people who created it.
>>
>>134568118
That's literally no worse than any HK restaurant, even today. It actually looks fairly clean. Remember, this is China we're talking about.

I mean at the end of the day really, it was just a bunch of buildings that were clustered together where lots and lots of people lived. Each and every one with their story to tell. Yea it probably dirty, noisy for sure, and not too spacious but I'm sure the people within it felt just fine. But it was cheap, you got to know and interact with your neighbors, everyone helped and looked out for each others kids and lived just fine. There was probably more social cohesion and interaction in Kowloon then in your typical suburb nowadays. You'd have a few generations living together that each helped in in their own part in running the household, you'd go to work in your little workshop during the day, and then when done chill on the rooftops with a beer at the end of the day watching the planes land by. It was probably a safe enough existence if you ignored the junkies and the didn't butt into triad business. I guess after years of living there you'd naturally start to see Kowloon as a sort of insulated world, or even a fortress of sorts , isolated from the "outside". You had everything you needed to get by and Kowloon provided you with whatever else you were missing. I can see why people who lived there would miss it after it was gone.
