The weakness of democracy is that people will try to convince people to vote against their best interests or render the vote pointless because all parties are the same or will ignore the interests of the people.
Its more a case of other groups being at fault rather than democracy.
For example you have groups like Communists that say they will do away with voting once in power and openly undermine it. Why exactly are they in the system then as an option? How is their undermining of democracy a criticism of democracy.

Democracy is the death of a free society. Mob rule very quickly devolves into pure anarchism or reverts to dictatorship. How do you counter this? Find republican roots, reform the parties, preferably have more than two viable parties, restrict voting to citizens and enact requirements for citizenship.
Get rid of the gibs. A very basic safety net for citizens who get fucked over is fine but the goal should be to encourage self sufficiency and improvement, not a welfare state where taxpayers subsidize a ravenous vagina and womb.
